A day to remember and respect

THERE was a large congregation at the Kirkin’ of the Cornet service in the Langholm parish church last Sunday.

The service was conducted by the Rev Bob Milne and Cornet Simon Richardson read a lesson as did jubilee Cornet Billy Bell.

After a presentation to the Cornet, Nicky Henderson sang a solo and Jackie Beckett sang when the offering was being taken.

The retiring collection was in aid of the Sunday School funds.

Before the church service the Cornet and his right and left-hand men Andrew Johnstone and Kevan Grieve and members of the Common Riding committee joined Mr Milne at the war memorial in Buccleuch Park. There was a short service of remembrance and a wreath was laid by Cornet Richardson.

Band member Nicole Weatherstone played the Last Post and piper Craig Irving played the Lament.

The Lodge Eskdale Kilwinning held its annual parade, led by the Langholm Town Band, to the evening service in the parish church which was conducted by Junior Grand Chaplain Rev Bro Iain Ramsden and Rev Bro Bob Milne.

The organist was Ross Luescher and lessons were read by IPM Bro I Lindsley and RWM Bro D Yarrow PM.PM Bro Alex Pool sang a solo as did IPPGM Bro P Irving Stuart.

Visitors from other lodges attended the service and the retiring collection was in aid of Age Concern.

Teas were served in the Masonic clubrooms on their return.
