THE vacancy caused by the death of the late master, Mr G. J. Todd has at length been filled up by the election of Mr Adam Smith, M.A., Rector of the Academy at Arbroath.IN the presence of a large number of spectators, a practical demonstration of the efficiency of the Minimax hand fire extinguisher was given on the Kilngreen on Thursday last by Mr H. Hill, a representative of Minimax Ltd., Royal London House, Finsbury Square, E.C.MR M. BLACKWELL, who for several years has been superintendent of Eskdalemuir Observatory, left the district at the week-end on the first stage of his journey to take up a post in the Antarctic.“THE name of the game is publicity” was the message put across to an open meeting of the Eskdale and Liddesdale Chamber of Trade held last Tuesday night in the Eskdale Hotel.

A MEETING of those favourable to the Carlisle, Langholm and Hawick Railway, was held within the Tower Hotel at 12 o’clock noon.ON Friday evening a highly delightful concert, arranged by Mr Moore, bandmaster at Langholm, was held in Ewes Public School.UNDER the Valuation and Rating (Scotland) Act, 1956, a complete revaluation of property in Scotland has to come into force in the year 1961/2, one of the objects being to secure uniformity in assessments as far as possible.LORNA IRVING, Townfoot, was at it again last weekend, and this time she has run herself into an automatic entry for the famous London Marathon next year.

A FRIEND sends us the following curious piece of information from the North. There is little change to note in the state of the tweed trade of the Border district. SIR, By the time your issue of this week is in the hands of your readers the Guy Fawkes celebrations in Langholm will be past for yet another year. LANGHOLM’S wheelchair athletes have done it again.

MESSRS Harrison held their closing special sale of store cattle and sheep at Langholm Mart on Thursday in fine weather.DEAR Langholmites who are far away – it was with this phrase that the late Mr Matt. Plenty of foxes to hunt in 1858

THE Eskdale fox hounds commenced cub hunting on the 21st ult., at Castle O’er, after two splendid runs succeeded in killing two foxes. IN THE established Church, Canonbie, last week, there was erected a beautiful memorial brass tablet, to the memory of a venerable and much esteemed lady, the widow of the Rev. George Colville, who survived her husband for nearly 35 years. ON 13th September just over 1000 balloons were released at Lockerbie for a race organised by the R.A.F. Association. A VERY pleasant and informal function took place at Irvine House on Wednesday evening when three former employees of Buccleuch Estates were presented with Armada silver bowls in recognition of over 40 years’ service each.

A BALL was held here on the 24th ult., in the Crown Inn Assembly Room, when a goodly attendance of beauty and fashion assembled from various parts of the surrounding districts.A SPECIAL meeting of Langholm School Board was held in the Academy on Friday forenoon, Mr Bell, Hillside, presiding.This being the first meeting of the Board since the death of Mr Howie, Mr Bell said that he was sure he was only expressing the mind of the Board in referring to the great loss the Board, and the cause of education had sustained by the death of Mr Howie, who had been the esteemed headmaster of the school for the long period of 32 years, he having been appointed on 6th March, 1876. THE opening meeting of the winter session of the E. and L. Archaeological Society was held in commercial Cafe on Wednesday evening when there was a good attendance of members. THE Rev. Thomas Calvert, H.C.F., former minister of Langholm Old Parish Church, died last Tuesday, in his 81st year and the 23rd year after coming to Langholm.

THERE has been lately some slight skirmishes between the advanced post of the belligerents – the main bodies have not as yet taken the field.THE death occurred at his residence, The Schoolhouse, on Friday morning, of Mr John Howie, rector of Langholm Academy.THE Eskdale Car Club held a touring rally on Sunday, when 14 cars competed.MR GORDON BOWDEN, Durdar Road, Carlisle, has applied for a road service licence to operate a public bus service between Langholm and Longtown.

WE understand that arrangements are likely to be made for securing the permanent services of Mr Harper, solo player in the Theatre Royal, Edinburgh, for the purpose of instructing the Langholm Brass Band.THIS match was played at Newcastleton on Thursday.CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. James Tuton P.T. Instructor at Langholm Academy, who will appear on the B.B.C. Television programme on the 31st October.YESTERDAY, the Langholm Woollen Mill – Reid & Taylor or The Factory made a takeover of a goodly part of London for their quarter-million pound show, “London – A City for All Seasons”. It was an enormous success.

THIS annual fair, now one of the most important in the South of Scotland for the sale of lambs, was held on last Friday week, on the Common to the west of the village.THE annual show of this Society was held at Newcastleton on Saturday.FOR the first time since 1949 and for the second time in history Langholm were the winners of Selkirk Seven-a-side Sports, which were held on the Philiphaugh ground, Selkirk, on Saturday.ALTHOUGH the day was anything but bright, two light showers in the early forenoon was all the rain that the Cattle show had to put up with on Saturday.

Beattie, Carlisle: “Some weeks ago the writer of Notes and Comments in the “E. & L”. made mention of a suggestion regarding the placing of a seat or seats in the Library Grounds mainly, I presume, for the use of our old folks.Hailstorm forces delay in ceremony – ALL Saints’ Church in Langholm lodge grounds – the “English Kirk”, as it is more familiarly known – was full to capacity on Sunday for a service of Celebration to mark its centenary year, and its distinguished congregation included H.R.H. The Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.
