THIS Boys’ Common Riding was held on July 5, 1991 and we know this from the programme that the boys produced themselves.
The standard bearer was David I Irving, with Ian Earsman as right-hand man and Wayne Irving as left-hand man.
The boys met on Thomas Telford Road and walked to Walter Street where, standing on the wall, they held the first fair crying and the standard was passed over. From there they went on to someone’s house to collect the crown, spade, thistle and barley banna.
They went to the Bar Entry, which they charged up, as on the Kirk Wynd, and across the road up to Hallpath. Then they walked to the Round House where sods were cut and the fair cried again. After circling the Round House, they had refreshments before heading back to Drove Road and on to Arkinholm where the afternoon was filled with the Cornet’s Chase and athletics, all organised by the boys.
Carrying the spade is James Ritchie, crown Darren Irving, barley banna Nicky Weatherstone and thistle Lee Earsman.
