Firefighters show their ‘mettle’

THE vacancy caused by the death of the late master, Mr G. J. Todd has at length been filled up by the election of Mr Adam Smith, M.A., Rector of the Academy at Arbroath.IN the presence of a large number of spectators, a practical demonstration of the efficiency of the Minimax hand fire extinguisher was given on the Kilngreen on Thursday last by Mr H. Hill, a representative of Minimax Ltd., Royal London House, Finsbury Square, E.C.MR M. BLACKWELL, who for several years has been superintendent of Eskdalemuir Observatory, left the district at the week-end on the first stage of his journey to take up a post in the Antarctic.“THE name of the game is publicity” was the message put across to an open meeting of the Eskdale and Liddesdale Chamber of Trade held last Tuesday night in the Eskdale Hotel.

LANGHOLM PAROCHIAL SCHOOL

The position has been an object of attraction to a large body of applicants, many of whom were in situations as important as that occupied by the successful candidate, and their testimonials as to character, scholarship, and experience, could scarcely be called inferior to his.

The heritors and minister have been most anxious to secure the services of a master qualified to attend not only to the elementary instruction of junior classes, but capable also of conducting the higher branches of a liberal education, so as to fit such pupils as may desire it, either for entering the Universities, or for embarking upon any of the various courses of life which invite the enterprise, and engage the efforts of the well educated youth of our country.

FIRE EXTINGUISHING DISPLAY

For the test a huge wooden structure was erected, which had received a liberal coating of tar.

Into this was placed sticks and shavings, and then the whole was saturated with paraffin oil.

It was then set ablaze, and when the flames were burning fiercely the Minimax was brought into action. The effect was immediate, the fire being extinguished in a few seconds. The test was quite severe enough, and certainly very satisfactory

The Minimax is a simple contrivance, and is light enough to carry in one hand. A blow on the floor forces the piston rod at the bottom of the appliance into the inside. This is all that is required to set it in action, and the instant the blow is given the contents are ejected in a spray a distance of 30 feet.

BOUND FOR ANTARCTICA

He will be engaged in meteorological research with the British Expedition, and will live in the far South for one year.

On his way he calls at Montevideo.

He was a very popular man in the district, and during his stay in Eskdalemuir he was very active in parish affairs.

At the dinner-dance of The 12 Club in Ashley Bank Hotel on Friday, Mr Blackwell was wished God-speed by the company.

TRADERS MEET TOURIST MAN

Mr Slinn from Dumfries and Galloway Tourist Board speaking on how to promote this area as a tourist attraction said that the board had already taken steps to help to put Langholm on the map as it was featured in the new Dumfries and Galloway tourism brochure.

James Harkness, from the Langholm tourist office, who is in direct contact with visitors to the area and familiar with the sort of questions they ask, suggested that Langholm could be “sold” as a centre, from which holiday-makers could make day trips to other parts of the Borders or even further afield.

Elaborating on this idea Mr Slinn proposed that it might be possible for hoteliers and guesthouse owners to team up with their contemporaries in other towns to provide an organised package deal – say two days here and two days there – for tourists.

John Medcalf, Hart Manor, said that one of the things we would have to do to promote the area was to persuade the Tourist Board that we have something extraordinary to offer – for instance – “the shortest and most attractive route to Edinburgh”.

He went on to say that nowadays many people with children couldn’t afford hotel accommodation and what Langholm needed was a first-class caravan site.

Margaret Sagar, Parliament Square, put forward the suggestion that Langholm might do well to advertise itself as a climbing and walking resort.

First of all, though, she said, before launching a large-scale promotion drive something should be done about the disgusting smell from the sewerage at the foot of the town.
